Peer Respite to empower people with their personal recovery

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

Peer 4 Peer is pleased to offer a bespoke tropical respite in one of Queensland's most beautiful locations, Magnetic Island North Queensland.

This special place with its beautiful beaches has a powerful effect on those who visit, allowing Mother Nature to be the principle healer.

Since 2017, the Sunshine Coast based Lived Experience specialists, Peer 4 Peer, has been helping people recover through mental health challenges via a range of therapies, group activities, and 1:1 support with professional Peer Mentors – people with lived experience on their own recovery journeys.

Peer 4 Peer Respite Coordinator Allison Crawford says the 6-day/5 night program aims for a balance between activities, relaxation and conversation, where up to 3 participants (per program) will live communally and comfortably under one roof in the magnificent Magnetic Island receiving support from experienced Peer Mentors.

“For many people experiencing mental health challenges, this type of respite program was financially ‘out of reach’ a few years ago. However, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has since changed all of that, with individual support funding packages via the NDIS Short-term Accommodation Stay (STA).

We have tailored the program around fun, growth, healing and connection, where the personal stories of participants and peer workers, which includes feelings and understandings of their mental health challenges, are mutual. This is fundamentally the spirit of peer work values – equality and sharing,” says Allison.

Participants can expect to focus on themselves during their stay, as well as make new connections through various activities including but not limited to, breakfast with the Koala's, sunset cruise, spa session and a theatre restaurant experience.

“Our Peer Mentors have been through their own crisis or trauma-related events over many years, so we know what is takes to recover. Importantly for participants, this program is about better health through better living. The natural surrounds of this place where we are staying is not only empowering, it’s the perfect place to discover your wellness.” Allison concluded.
